Knee Pain Q & A
What causes knee pain?
Knee pain is often the result of osteoarthritis, an injury, or a mechanical problem brought on by years of wear and tear. As you get older, the cartilage in your knee joint may break down and lead to joint stiffness and chronic pain with every step you take. Knee problems also occur as a result of medical conditions like gout, or as a result of being overweight and putting added pressure on your joints.
Injury-related knee pain can affect your ligaments, tendons, and the fluid around your knee joint. You can also hurt the bones and cartilage in your knees. Some of the most common knee injuries include:
- Bursitis, or the inflammation of fluid sacs that cushion your knee joint
- Patellar tendinitis, or the inflammation of tendons surrounding your kneecap
- Ligament injuries, such as to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
- Torn meniscus, or the tearing of cartilage (meniscus) around your knee
- Fractures to the bones in your knee, including the kneecap (patella)
Knee pain may also be the result of a change in your gait because of foot pain or hip pain, or the result of osteoarthritis, one of the most common degenerative knee conditions.
How do you treat acute or chronic knee pain?
Once the INVO Pain Medicine Group team performs a comprehensive exam to assess the cause of your knee pain, they create a customized treatment plan based on your individual needs and lifestyle. They may recommend physical therapy to help strengthen your knee, custom foot orthotics to provide better support, or minimally invasive fluoroscopic injections.
INVO Pain Medicine Group also prescribes regenerative medicine for treatments in the form of platelet-rich plasma injections. Or, they may recommend viscosupplementation injections. With all types of injections, the team performs them with their on-site ultrasound technology for guided imaging (fluoroscopy).
What is viscosupplementation?
Viscosupplementation is a medical procedure in which the INVO Pain Medicine Group team uses fluoroscopic imaging to inject lubricating fluid into your painful knee joint. This procedure is most commonly used to treat degenerative conditions of the knee, such as osteoarthritis. Typically, the viscosupplementation injections include hyaluronic acid — a key component of healthy joints.
If you suffer from osteoarthritis, receiving viscosupplementation injections to replace hyaluronic acid can reduce chronic pain, improve mobility, and potentially slow the progression of the disease.
